Teachers and teaching

Our staff are our most important resource. It is their skills, personalities and commitment which make St. Andrew's Cambridge a special place to learn.

Cambridge is an attractive place to live and work, which makes it easier to recruit the right people. Many of the staff have university connections that can be invaluable for students gathering advice about higher education. Our Science department is headed by Dr. David Applin who is a specialist in Biology and who was elected a Fellow of the Linnean Society in 2002. Many of our teachers were educated at Oxbridge and can assist students with information and guidance with respect to entry to those key universities.

All our teachers are specialists in their subjects; many of them are examiners and believe in active, student-centered teaching. They are able to make the material interesting and to communicate their enthusiasm. They are also thorough and very aware of the best way to get you examination-ready. We are committed to helping you learn, which involves working with you to build strengths and to sort out problems fast.

Supervision and support

Ensuring that you are happy, learning well, and getting the best out of your time in Cambridge is a serious responsibility for us all.

Teachers play an important part, but the key people on the 'pastoral' side, are the supervisors. Supervisors are at the centre of our care network, and they keep in close touch with teachers, house staff, and parents.

You meet your supervisor in groups and individually, every week, to discuss work, leisure - anything which is important to us and to you.

In practice this can range from advising on time-management, work output, helping you prepare the strongest possible university application - or simply having the time to talk through something that may be bothering you.

If need be, supervisors can provide or arrange:

  • extra help with academic skills
  • specialist attention for specific needs such as dyslexia.
  • time-tabled study sessions to support you if you need more structure.
  • independent counselling services.
