Safeguarding

We take your care and well-being very seriously to ensure you have as happy and fulfilling a time with us as possible.

Safeguarding is defined as:

  • Protecting children and young people from abuse.
  • Preventing any damage to children and young people’s health and development.
  • Making sure that children and young people grow up in a safe and caring environment.
  • Helping all children and young people to have the best outcomes in life.

We safeguard you in the following ways:

  • The college is a safe space. Talk to any member of staff if you are worried about something, or if you do not feel safe. They will listen to you.
  • All staff are trained in safeguarding. They know how to listen to young people, how to notice if something is not right, and what to do if they are concerned about a student.
  • Key team members have advanced safeguarding training, including what to do if a student suffers from abuse.
  • You will learn how to recognise abuse and how to keep yourself safe, including online.
  • We do not tolerate any form of abuse between students. This includes bullying (in person or online), sexual violence, or any form of harassment (including sharing sexual images of another student, touch without consent, or unwanted sexual comments or messages).

What should I do if I feel unsafe?

  • If you feel unsafe, worried, scared or upset, please talk to any member of staff with whom you feel comfortable. It could be your teacher, House Manager or someone in our office. They will listen to you and help you to get the support you need.

Safety guidance

Safety on the streets

  • After you move in, ensure you find suitable, safe routes to school, the city centre, shops, etc. Seek out well-lit areas. Avoid walking in dark, desolate spaces alone at night.
  • When walking somewhere, walk confidently and face oncoming traffic. When crossing the road, make sure to look both ways, or use a pedestrian crossing. Please be aware cars may drive on the opposite side of the road what you’re used to.
  • If travelling at night, avoid walking alone. We recommend you walk in a small group. Try to use public transport, or take a taxi.
  • Do not carry large amounts of cash or valuables with you.
  • Always keep your bag and coat with you. Do not leave belongings out of sight. Carry your bag close to your body with the zips facing inwards.
  • Carry your mobile phone discreetly and you have enough battery charge left in case of emergency. Add the School Emergency Number (07985 026 835) as a contact. Also add the number of your host family or house manager.
  • Avoid confrontation.
  • If you ever feel like you’re being followed, cross the street. If you’re still concerned, go to the nearest public area, such as a restaurant or pub, and ask the staff to help you.

Tips for using public transport

  • View the bus timetables for Cambridge here: http://www.stagecoachbus.com/routemaps-cambridge.aspx
  • Avoid waiting for your bus for prolonged periods alone at night.
  • When on the bus at night, sit near the driver if possible.
  • When heading home, ask someone to meet you at the bus stop. If that is not possible, let your host family or house warden know that you’re on your way home.

Tips on using taxis

  • Call Panther Taxis on 01223 715715. Store the number in your mobile phone in case you need it.
  • Check your cab has an official taxi license plate, found on the rear of the vehicle by the registration number (e.g. license plate).
  • Have cash ready to pay the driver. You may be able to pay by card, and it’s best to confirm with the driver beforehand.
  • It is acceptable to ask the taxi driver to wait until you have entered your accommodation before driving off.
